Collective bargaining is a key means through which employers and their organizations and trade unions can establish fair wages and working conditions. It also provides the basis for sound labour relations. Typical issues on the bargaining agenda include wages, working time, training, occupational health and safety and equal treatment. The Fair Labor Standards Act of (FLSA) set standards for minimum wage and requires employers to pay employees for overtime work, among other things. If an employee works overtime, the employer must pay at least one and a half times the regular salary per hour. The FLSA requires the employer to pay at least minimum wage.

Fair trade puts this idea into action. All farmers in the Fairtrade system agree to use environmentally friendly farming practices, implement fair labor standards and invest in their communities. The Fairtrade social premium, an additional amount of money paid on top of the fair price that farmers receive, helps make those investments happen. Organized labor, pursuing its narrow interests by means of the powers conferred upon it by government, has the power, in many parts of the country, to determine who shall be employed and who shall be denied work. This unpleasant truth is emphasized by Senator Hayakawa in the Preface he contributes to this book.
